In just a few years, my parents will be retiring and like many other baby boomers, they have dreams of becoming snowbirds. They currently own a toy hauler but they are looking at motorhomes for sale to see if they need to upgrade. To help them decide, I gave them a list of things to consider.
Consider Your Home
My parents plan on being gone months at a time. To prepare for this, my family moved into their home. We are taking care of the home as they begin practicing for their future retirement. Anyone looking to be gone for an extended time will also need to find some way for the house to be cared for while they are gone.
Consider the Repairs
Since they plan on being gone for months, I told my father he needs to learn how to fix everything on the motorhome before he leaves. He does not want to be in the middle of nowhere and not know how to fix something gone wrong.
With the toy hauler, this isn't much of a concern. The car can haul it into a repair shop. However, a Class A, Class B or a Class C, means they would have to fix it themselves. If he upgrades, then he will need to learn to fix everything on the RV.
Consider Your Needs
My parents are loners. Therefore, they can handle a small area. They will not be entertaining and won't ask anyone to join them on the trip. Therefore, a small toy hauler or pop-up will suit them fine.
However, if you want to take friends or family with you, then you need more room. Additionally, if you are the throw a party at the RV park type, then you will need more room for friends you meet along the way. In this case, more kitchen, refrigerator and cabinet space is needed for party supplies.
Hopefully, this will get you thinking of what you want out of your retirement. Before you start looking for motorhomes for sale, carefully consider your needs. No need to waste money on a big RV when a pop-up will do just fine.
